Visit the world’s only underground church and see the fascinating image of Christ on its rock wall before moving on to the adjacent mining exhibition with its displays of historic and contemporary mining practices. Our tour will tell why the church was established in an underground mine and how the amazing image there was foretold by a local prophecy
The 2m image emerged as the dust settled and consisted of white quarzite set on the surrounding wall of black rock.
The image brought visitors from all over the world but, over time, it began to fade and the chamber was filled in with gangue (low quality ore and cement).
The underground church is named after St Anna, the patron saint of miners, and has been built only a few metres from where the original image appeared.
Open all year for pre-arranged bookings.
