Address: Gammplatsen Lycksele
Open all year round, Sweden’s only forestry museum is home to fascinating exhibitions, a forestry cinema, Sami treasures, play and learning areas and much, much more. During the summer, your admission fee will include entry to the botanical garden and a Sami settlement, both of which are located at Gammplatsen - the picturesque cultural heritage site in Lycksele.
The history of the forestry industry and its workers is told through two exhibitions; The Lumberjack Epoch (Huggarepoken) and The Machine Epoch (Maskinepoken). Visitors can follow the development of industry tools and techniques from the 1800s to the present day via a collection of forestry machinery which is the largest of its kind in northern Europe.
The cinema screens a range of films, including one demonstrating the old practice of floating logs down a river.
For younger visitors, there’s the opportunity to try on clothes from an older era and play in a Sami settlement, lumberjack cabin or market stall. They can also learn about the natural world and the region’s cultural heritage.
The Museum also present a unique collection of sami treasures, some of wich is displayed in a new exhibition called “The Forest Saami”.
Interesting objects includes traditional artefacts, contemporary art and an original Saami ceremonial drum from the 17 th century.
The Forestry Museum is not just about the past. Its modern conference facilities, on-hand refreshments and wonderful view over the River Umeälven make it a perfect venue for corporate gatherings. This unique and modern creative environment is surrounded by traditional wooden structures and yet boasts good acoustics and the latest presentation equipment along with ample space to display materials, vehicles, machines etc.
The museum is located at Gammplatsen, an outcrop of land surrounded on three sides by the Umeälven. Th first site for the town of Lycksele, Gammplatsen is now the home of the local heritage museum, botanical garden and nature reserve and also has pre-historic remains and a Sami settlement. The summer admission fee covers entry to all the attractions, including the hunting museum (Jaktmuseet), post and telecommunications museum (Post & Telemuseet) and the bakery (Bagarstugen). For younger visitors there are loads of fun activities, such stilt-walking and pedal cars.
